The Importance of Certain Roofing Components

Have you ever wondered looking at an estimate what specific things mean? Has your roofer neglected to teach you the importance of specific roofing material?

Let‘s start with ascending order from the edge of your roof.

1.) The Drip Edge

The Drip Edge caps the edge of your plywood and guides water into your eavestroughs also known as your gutters. Often neglected, the edges of your plywood will rot much faster and eventually lead to structural issues if not addressed at the time of a re roof.

2.) The Ice and Water Shield

The Ice and Water Shield is a rubberized membrane that goes up most commonly the first 3 feet of your roof and under all of your metal valleys. This membrane protects from water seepage under the shingles when Calgary gets it’s infamous chinooks. The constant melting and freezing we experience can cause water to seep underneath the shingles. Especially in areas of high ice concentration.

3.) The Synthetic Underlayment

Previously, roofers used to use felt underlayment which wasn’t the best water repellant. Nowadays we use a synthetic tarp like material which is your second line of defence!

4.) Venting

Your plumbing stack, goosenecks and box vents will all be replaced with new ones. Most common leaks occur to incorrect venting. We make sure that this isn’t a problem ever.

5.) Metal Valleys

Pieces of metal that run where two roofs meet to help with expelling water. They can be anywhere from 22 gauge to 32 gauge.

6.) Shingles

Everyone knows what they do! Based on the choice of material and manufacturers the benefits can vary!
